Some pastors have come to assume that people do not want to be visited because they are too busy. But current popular attention to spirituality of all sorts speaks of an abiding hunger for fuller relationship with God and for greater coherence in fragmented lives. I believe that pastoral visitation and the relationships it fosters can help to meet this longing. In what follows, I commend a reconsideration of noncrisis, nonproblem-focused pastoral visitation for purposes of extending care and nurture.
